…is to crash head-on into a Deputy’s squad car.
BRADENTON – A deputy finishing up a routine call received a jarring surprise when a drunken driver crashed head-on into his vehicle.
Deputy Scott Schell was parked at 9:18 p.m. Monday in the 1100 block of 61st Avenue East in Bradenton, when Israel Lara-Contreras crossed the center line, striking the patrol car.
Deputies observed that Lara-Contreras, 43, appeared intoxicated — “watery, glassy, red and bloodshot” eyes and “slurred mumbled speech,” according to his arrest report.
Open beer cans were found in the driver’s seat, passenger’s seat and rear seat of the 1994 Nissan Pathfinder, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office. No one else was in the vehicle.
Lara-Contreras agreed to perform a field sobriety tests, but deputies called it off for safety reasons, a report states. Lara-Contreras, who allegedly struggled to stand on his own, did not understand the instructions, despite use of a Spanish translator.
His blood alcohol content, however, was enough to warrant an arrest, measuring at .355 — more than four times the legal limit.
Lara-Contreras was taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital to be cleared before being booked at the Manatee County Jail, where he remains without bond. He is charged with driving under the influence, causing damage to property.
No injuries were reported.
