Former NBA Center Felton Spencer charged with DUI

From USA Today:

Former NBA and University of Louisville basketball player Felton Spencer was arrested early Sunday morning in Oldham County (Kentucky) and charged with driving under the influence.

Spencer, 51, was found asleep in the driver’s seat of his 2006 Ford Expedition around 2:28 a.m. at a gas station in Prospect, Kentucky, according to Oldham County Police’s arrest citation.

Police said Spencer had a plastic cup with ice in it in his hand. When police woke him, he told them he had come from his house and fallen asleep at the gas station and that the cup contained Crown Royal. Spencer also said he had consumed three glasses of Crown Royal, according to police.

Spencer “was unsteady on his feet and had glassy eyes” and “smelled strongly of alcoholic beverage,” the arrest citation said.  During a field sobriety test, Spencer tried to use the police cruiser for balance, police said, and the test was stopped for Spencer’s safety.

He refused a breath test, saying he would not take one without his attorney present.

The 7-foot-1 Spencer played for Louisville from 1986-90, going on to become the sixth pick in the 1990 NBA draft. He played for six different NBA teams in a career that lasted through 2002.
